31MarMonday Morning Briefing

Style.com covers the panel discussion we attended at the Met yesterday. When Scott Schuman equated the internet with the “wild west” I happened to be sipping my Poland Spring and embarrassingly choked because that’s exactly what is written on our about page.

Nicolas Ghesquiere discusses LA women at the launch of the Balenciaga boutique in the city of Angels on WWD -photos from the event at InStyle.Co.UK.

We ended up blowing off the Jeremy Kost opening at the Tribeca Grand we were planning to attend, but luckily Style.com didn’t. We’re glad to hear he has other projects in the works considering the format he shoots with, Polaroid, will soon be extinct. For a lovely visual flash collage of Polaroids, ‘come as you are’ to the Seven NY website -click the Polaroids to enter and find out about their latest arrivals for your viewing & purchasing pleasure!

These are our photos of the mens room at the Goethe Institut where Clemens en August was for sale this weekend (we love a man unafraid to wear pink).

30MarHow We’re Spending Our Sunday

booksofwonder_invite_08.jpgLongtime friend of the Army of M.E., Greg Foley, is launching his second kids book entitled “Don’t Worry Bear” at Books of Wonder -it seems like just yesterday we were at the launch of Thank You Bear at Strand Bookstore…Well, it was just a year ago. Not bad for someone with a little ‘day job’ like Creative Director of Visionaire and Design Director of V and Vman, huh? Purchase both titles for a little special someone in your life -the lesson of the stories and graphics are so sweet.

After the book reading & signing we are headed to the MET for the blog mode discussion panel.

29MarClemens En August At Goethe

From a previous correspondence by Dr. Stephan Wackwitz, the Director of Program Dept., Goethe-Institut:

“(Clemens en August)…featured in “Wallpaper”, “Monocle”, “The London Times” etc. is considered one of the most innovative and hip enterprises in Germany. After extensive experience organizing shows in Paris and Milan CeA came up with a new concept to avoid the over-expensive luxury retail market and high PR costs. Their strategy is to offer their product directly to customers…they decided to sell their women’s and men’s collection only in galleries and museums like KW Berlin, Haus der Kunst Munich, MAK in Vienna and galleries like Produzentengalerie Hamburg and Hauser & Wirth in Zurich this concept had a very positive start. *Clemens en August will be at the gallery of the Goethe-Institut NY from 29.March to 1.April, 11am-8pm”. The Army of M.E. loves this guerrilla concept and they are building a rather exclusive brand for themselves, outfitting James McAvoy at the Academy Awards last month.

28MarAndrea Branzi : Open Enclosures

Opening 28.March @ 11am at the Fondation Cartier in Paris. Branzi, one of the most brilliant designers & architects of the current time, creates two new installations of metal & glass intertwined with natural elements and are “immersed in the musical environment of Patti Smith”. 28MarBuilt By Wendy Sample Sale

built-by-wendy-samplesale.jpg

I honestly haven’t rocked any of my Built by Wendy since (ecstatically/impatiently) turning 30 -her stuff is adorably cute…which is great…if you’re into that.

27MarBye Dkny

dkny-wall.jpg

It’s a bit odd that ads in NYC can become symbolic landmarks but there have been many. From the Maxwell House cup of coffee steaming above a downtrodden Times Square, to a Yahoo marquee at Lafayette & Houston blinking the hope of the .com era that almost was. Another ad that symbolizes downtown NYC will soon be vanishing -the DKNY mural at Broadway & Houston. Apparently, the building has changed owners and DKNY has lost its “right to use it this month” states WWD. The image was based on a logo design of Peter Arnell’s and has covered the building for 16 years. I liked that they didn’t airbrush out the Twin Towers as if they never existed like so many did. On a practically windowless building with such exposure I can only wonder what will be next.

27MarThe Army Of M. E. Hearts Public School

nylovesme-by-public-school.jpgHells yes we do! We’re not some private school pussys -public school gave us the edge to kick ass & take numbers. Actually, we’re addressing the street wear line & we are obviously diggin’ this tee that will be available in the fall as it is from their F/W ‘08 collection. Not only because we are the Army of “M.E.” and NY does love us, but because of the hidden (accurate) subtleties. Go ahead look a little bit closer at that heart…that’s right. It’s the perfect visual message of just what it is to be a NYer as only a true one would know. It loves you, it effs you, you love it, you hate. All we know is, we love this tee.

27MarParis’ Facelift

Not well-circulated is the fact that most Parisians think la Tour Eiffel as a phallic eyesore destroying their otherwise vertically modest cityscape. In contrast, the rest of the world identifies it as the symbol of style, romance and culture that is Paris. Circulating the design world of late are future architectural additions to the city -potentially to the dismay of the refined residents. Next year, on its 120th Anniversary (there is no word in French for birthday so anniversaire is used for all) the Eiffel Tower will look as it does in the below photo. Parisian Serero Architects have won the competition to redesign the public viewing platform, doubling the capacity of the area without permanently modifying the current structure. The only thought that comes to my mind are those yellow elevators that shoot you to the top -they already require tourists to squeeze like sardines and wait on ridiculously long lines. Plus, I think its scary looking.

Unmissable from the viewing deck of the Eiffel Tower is Paris’ business district, La Defense, which is also considering designs for a high rise building to be called Tour Signal. Five architect renderings have been submitted all of which you can see in detail here. High rises are the new black -in seemingly every city.

27MarArmory Weekend : Scope : New York

Swiss artist Comenius Roethlisberger recently concluded a presentation of this exhibition on the first floor of Colette in Paris and is now at SCOPE in New York. In “Dearest Constellation, Sweetest Invitation” powdered sugar and cocaine are suspended in resin boxes to create logos of recognizable fashion brands.
