30JunAu Revoir Florent

If you didn’t make it over to Florent as we advised you to weeks ago in show of your support and sadness to say farewell, the Army of M.E. may just wage war on you. No, we won’t, but you are officially too late. Yesterday was the last day and having some crazy Gay Pride plans is no excuse. The 24-7 NYC classic establishment will be very missed -especially at around 3am when we are wasted and in the Meatpacking…

30JunMaria Luisa Has Moved A Few Blocks Away

Although my love for NYC is deep and real, upon my first visit to Paris I became a bit envious after seeing two places -no, not the Louvre, although it is a close third- Colette and Maria Luisa. Both boutiques inspired me to open my own lifestyle store with unique clothing labels. Maria Luisa has now moved after residing in its Rue Cambon address for 20 years to 7 Rue Rouget de L’Isle. Owner Maria Luisa Poumaillou decided on the move just a few blocks away so that she could house her main store of young styles (Mixte) and her shoe store in the same space. She claims the clean white, mirrored space “makes it easier for everyone to understand what we’ve always been doing, which is offering avant-garde fashion that is also somehow wearable, but always different.”

27JunObama Not Versace Muse

The PR spin doctors over at Versace have released a statement regarding the entirely mis-interpreted assumption that Obama is the muse of their current designs (I’d say 80% of the fashion ’stories’ that we ingest -and cause heartburn- each day are complete propaganda). In keeping with proper dinner party etiquitte of dis-associating in topics of politics and religion -Versace is playing it safe and politically correct by insisting quotes were taken out of context (shocker!)stating, “It was the type of man Barack Obama represents that inspired the men’s spring/summer 2009 collection, a modern man with a laid back, relaxed look and attitude. Not Obama himself.”

27JunNelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday Celebration This Weekend

Obviously Naomi Campbell won’t be there for the celebration this weekend as Mr. Mandela has gone out of his way to ban her after her debacle with the law, but she did have the courtesy (or urging of her publicist) to show up to Mandela’s birthday dinner the other night -with her new hot man piece, Marcus Elias (both pictured here at the event). Recently-hospitalized Amy Winehouse will be there to perform (maybe) -she left the medical facility early to rehearse for this weekend. She was a no-show at the photocall for his birthday concert a couple of days ago, but it was because she had to visit her Blake in prison. Ah, the glamorous life of celebrity…getting banned from a party celebrating the world’s most forgiving man, getting hospitalized due to excessive use of crack and visiting the hubby in jail. The below photo of Winehouse is her leaving a store the day she skipped out on the photocall to pick up some little bottles of liquor -priorities.

27JunPropaganda: Thierry Mugler Exhibit

Out of our London bunker comes a rumor that there is going to be a “MAJOR” (when the Brits say it it’s slightly more dramatic, so translation: super completely ultra major) exhibition on Thierry Mugler around next year. The museum has yet to be decided but can we say Barbican anyone? I know, that’s in London and the show would likely be in Paris. We’ll share more the second we find out. This news arrives a week before the Paris show that we can’t wait to see! We should warn you now that the Army of M.E. has collectively compiled their gear for a “MAJOR” European invasion -we leave this weekend for two weeks so we apologize in advance for intermittent postings. We are on a reKon mission of the Koutur kind.

26JunTanya Ling: The Next Big Thing

The line between fashion and art is once again blurred by London-based fashion illustrator Tanya Ling, who is seemingly inescapable at the moment. Today is the artist’s live illustration performance at the Barbican appropriately inspired by Viktor & Rolf’s fall collection (see V&R @ Barbican story HERE). Ling’s creative roots are grounded in fashion, having once worked for Army of M.E. favorite Christian Lacroix and more recently with Marc Jacobs on Louis Vuitton’s Resort collection. For the line, Ling developed a stripe pattern that translated fluidly into lovely separates -our favorite of which is pictured here.
