-The Army of M.E. hit the many sales we publicized on this site. It was more an exercise in socializing than shopping. One place we were not this weekend was the movies. Our movie fund jar will go towards seeing The Happening next week. Is it because we are so OVER hearing about the film we dare not mention…or are we hypocrites who were at the premiere last Tuesday?
-if you were unable to view/purchase the Alexander Wang for Uniqlo dress collection on Friday, they have a small amount reserved for re-stocking today. Mr. Wang will tonight be attending the CFDA awards with friend Erin Wasson. Of his nomination he is not nervous, just happy to be attending. It’s the designers with attitudes like his that make giving a crap about fashion almost okay. Totally excluding the inhuman shallowness of someone like Karl Lagerfeld, of course.
-at Swarovski’s pre-CFDA-party last night, all nominees/honorees received original artwork by Tobie Giddio. Like most artists’ ambivalence about being associated with fashion, Ms. Giddio wishes for her art to not be characterized as fashion illustrations but rather “(a representation of) the essence of the clothing…they’re abstractions that have nothing to do with selling anything.” While I understand her intentions in regard to the subject of her work, it’s a difficult statement to prove. Whether in reference to the subject of a work or the artist’s intentions for personal gain, it is impossible to have nothing to do with selling. Unless, of course, you leave your anonymous work littered on the streets for people to take (in which case no one would notice/care or the hype machine alone could create some sort of mystical frenzy that would render the pieces priceless). The ultimate goal almost always involves commerce on some level when it comes to art, survival demands it. We mean no criticism by this as we’ve had our share of quotes from interviews misinterpreted and Giddio’s work is absolutely breathtaking. To the point that I would want to be a CFDA nominee for no reason other than receiving this work of art!
