25JulNew Social Bunker Opens : Country Club

Tomorrow night is the grand opening of ‘Country Club’ with a party featuring Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes. The press opening was Wednesday night so we’ll give a little prep talk…the dress code, as if anyone needed an excuse to dress this way, is uber preppie -the hats, the turned up collars and the army of M.E. collectively gagging in the corner. No, sorry, it’s…cool. It has edited country club aesthetics with downtown influences like Warhol photos and Zebra and crocodile skin banquettes. The drink to have here are the bellinis that have a bevy of different flavoring options like roasted pear, blood orange and my personal favorite cocktail flavor of the moment, pomegranite (I like to keep my liver confused by the poisonous alcohol and beneficial antioxidants flooding it at the same time). They also serve a light menu which you can see HERE courtesy of Thrillist.

25JulComme Des Garcons’ Retrospective In Mainland China

It’s the first retrospective they’ve held in mainland China and it’s not what you think, instead of voluminous creations on mannequins the Japanese label has decided to use the past 25 years of imagery associated with the iconic brand. Besides magazine ads there are corporate images and invitations blown up in a maze-like layout throughout a 5,300 sq. ft. gallery. According to Comme’s managing director Adrian Joffe (who also holds the title of creative director Rei Kawakubo’s husband), “printed matter is a crucial part of expressing the spirit of Comme des Garcons.”

25JulBblessing News : Installation + Sale

One of the Army of M.E.’s favorite LES boutiques is hosting an installation called ‘Quarantine of the Ostentatious’ created by Daniel Jackson (from Surface to Air). It sounds fascinating, especially with my recent obsession with death and dying. In addition to the installation is Bblessing’s continuing Summer Sale!

25JulThe Brooklyn Museum : Click! Exhibit

The Brooklyn Museum has tackled a proposition suggested by New Yorker columnist, James Surowiecki, in his book The Wisdom of Crowds. His book highlights the group opinion versus a single opinion from an expert, and suggests the former to be more ‘wise’. The Museum has found a way to apply this to art in a three step, highly democratic process. First, they asked artists to submit photos which demonstrate the “Changing Faces of Brooklyn”. Second, they openly asked the general public to rank the photos along with their knowledge level as far as art. Lastly, and currently, the results are on display -you may click HERE to see them. Interestingly, I’d say the hypothesis of this experiment proves somewhat accurate, certainly not dismissible. If you’re bored at work this is a great way to test your level of knowledge -for example, the photo of the razor wire in the foreground wrapping around the Statue of Liberty in the far distance I found way too literal. It seems the general public identifies with this literalism while experts do not. The exhibit is on at the museum through August 10th. The Brooklyn Museum is located at 200 Eastern Parkway. Brooklyn, New York. (The first photo is by artist Tamara Porras and the second by Eamonn Aiken-you may click on their names to be brought to their online exhibition page)
