It all comes down to one night, and what will I be doing? Throwing a party…I must do something to keep from crying and vomiting from the stress and anxiety so I’ll surround myself by a sea of people. This is a free event so feel free to join our like-minded community of passionate people who also love to party…we hope the evening will end in celebration!
Brilliant chef of The Waverly (and former co-worker of mine), chef John DeLucie is at the consulting helm for the latest, greatest epicurean addition to the West Village, Charles. A departure from DeLucie’s delectable comfort dishes, he has encouraged chef John McAllister to curate a menu from his specialty of lighter, healthy Mediterannean dishes. DeLucie is a consultant on the project and oversees the finalized menu which will be laden with fish and dishes cooked with olive oil as opposed to butter. In addition to heart-friendly fish and olive oil, some pre-opening dishes included seared duck breast with roasted grapes and escarole, braised beef short rib with swiss chard and golden raisins, as well as diver scallops and prawns with fingerling potatoes and saffron. The wine list and select cocktails equally impress with consultation by Keith Goldston, owner of Time Warner Building wine bar, Clo. The interior was designed by Rafael de Cardenas who worked the denizen space into a brilliant rustic and cozy atmosphere. Plush red curtains, marquee bulbs and black-speckled wall mirrors add to the tin-ceiling, dark-floored room. Don’t expect to just show up and wait at the bar though, there are only six seats at the bar and they are not giving out the phone number. You can attempt a touching novella that harkens all emotions of how you absolutely need to experience Charles before you die at: reservations@restaurantcharles.com -but they’ll likely give you the contact of their snaggle-toothed cousin named Charles before they’ll give up a table.

It opened on September 16th and we gave it about a month, as we do most new places that serve food -to work out the kinks (usually with service). The Army of M.E. were quite pleased and we have a feeling we would have been had we made it on opening day as well. It’s well known that the architects are AvroKo who also did Public which is just a few blocks south of Double Crown. The concept this time is focused around the British Empire, specifically the Eastern countries like India and Singapore colonized by the Brits. Specific to design you’ll find tons of teak, ceiling fans strung together with leather belts and carved, marble light fixtures dimly lit. Any menu with foie gras demands that we try it -inventively marinated with tandoori and accompanied by unique Early Grey prunes we were intrigued. One army member attempted the pheasant and licorice pie with lavender -I imagined the lavender tasting like soap but luckily it all worked together -not surprising considering the chef Brad Farmerie who specializes in executing epicurean delight from unlikely flavor combinations. Around the corner is the bar, which they also own, Madam Geneva which is great for after or before-dinner cocktails as well. 316 Bowery @ Bleecker.
No, really, we swear. Actually, we’ve never claimed anywhere else as the new Beatrice before, we’ve just been desperately wanting it for so long now and the other night a trusted friend uttered the above phrase. But don’t get too excited, it’s pretty much the same thing just on the east side with a little less sketch to its interior -which is not necessarily a good thing. I can certainly tell you that a proper write up with press photos in New York Magazine is not a good thing at all (when you’re attempting terminally cool and unaccessable). The same staples like tons of subway tile, vintage tables and chairs, dim lighting, good DJs and smaller, less iphone-snapshot-inspiring bathrooms are included. It’s located downstairs (of course) from the French restaurant Casanis at 81 Ludlow near Broome. Some peeps don’t know the # yet but we have 212.677.0067. To me, it’s the same dead souls rotting in the corners only now, since it’s a little brighter, I may actually have to see their faces, ugh.
