21AugNike Sportswear 21 Mercer Street Grand Opening

Tonight is the invite-only block party hosted by Nike in celebration of the opening of their 21 Mercer Street shop. It is the only location in the world that will have the entire Nike Sportswear collection as well as seasonal 21 Mercer exclusives. Other items available include the Air Max 90 Flywire, the Flywire Windrunner, 21 Mercer Nike LunaRacer, the made-to-order Air Force 1 Low Lux, the M65 jacket and the NSW 21 Mercer tee collection. As if you needed any more incentive, they will have a new appointment-only bespoke option which allows customers to work one-on-one with Nike designers to customize kicks. Nike Sportswear Bespoke is exclusive to this shop and will launch this Autumn with none other than the world-favorite Air Force 1’s. As for tonight’s event, Nike is transforming Mercer St. into a New York stadium where presentations by artist Robert Wilson, producer Noah Khoshbin, dancer Sofia Boutella, skateboarder Shingo Iwasaki and BMX rider Nigel Sylvester will collaborate in a “unique visual and sensory experience”. Complimenting this will be a series of projects by artists Timothy McGurr, Heron Preston and Boogie -all in attempt to capture the New York streetwear experience. If you were not invited to the party, the store will open tomorrow at 10am. Some photos of the interior:

20AugFour Target Pop - Up Shops Headed To Manhattan!

Although a bleak date for New Yorkers, Target decided to move ahead with September 11th being the launch date of their four pop-up shops around Manhattan. They are called “Bullseye Bodegas” and will be invading the neighborhoods of: East Village, Soho, Union Square and Midtown. There are obviously a lot of shows, good ones too, going on around town that day so in your mad cab rush you can swing by one, or several, of the shops. Naturally, they will be merchandised to Manhattan standards -no  Xhiliration flip-flops here (not that we have anything against them)- with the Jonathan Saunders’ line (which will have launched just prior), Sigerson Morrison’s shoes, Anya Hindmarch’s bags and Richard Chai’s collection.

19AugCoca - Cola Bottle Design By Rankin

The famous fashion photographer Rankin designed the Coca-Cola bottle pictured here. The limited edition design is in celebration of the hand-over of the Olympic flag from Beijing to London on Sunday. The bottles are appropriately only available at Selfridges in London. Rankin was quoted as saying, “As a Londoner, I love what the city represents -the vibrancy, the strength and the energy -so to reflect that with an image, which also represents the Olympics, was a fantastically exciting challenge for me as a photographer.”

19AugBand Of Outsiders Lego Project At Opening Ceremony L A

Speaking of the most amazing Olympic opening ceremony ever, comes one of the most amazing boutiques ever, Opening Ceremony. The LA shop now has a pop-up shop which is a Band of Outsiders Lego project -inspired by everyone’s favorite colorful building blocks’ 30th anniversary. Damn, I’m older than Legos?! That’s sobering. Apparently Scott Sternberg of BoO loves to play with his Legos and by Legos, I mean…Legos. In the pop-up shop are exclusive ties and a wall devoted to the yellow mini-figures which we have so many of floating around our bunkers. Opening Ceremony LA is at 451 N. LaCienega Blvd. LA,CA.

18AugAuthenticity Prevails At The Barneys Warehouse Sale

So, there was the Army of M.E. elbowing our way through the shoes at the Barneys warehouse sale. I scored the most adorable gray ankle boots that had all the right numbers -size and price. They were perfect for this season and I was already fantasizing about the navy blue and other autumn-inspired stocking colors I’d be wearing with the boots when I stood up and saw the reflection in the mirror. Somehow, the perfect boot in the box translated horribly on the body. They didn’t come too high -you know, if they don’t hit low enough on the ankle and are right at the bottom of the calf they truncate the leg to look like a tree stump. That’s never good but that wasn’t the problem, they were just not demure and sweet -they looked like bricks…no, cinder blocks dangling from my ankle. Reluctantly, I had to return them to the shelf and move on. Walking down the street, away from the sale, I thought about the boots and why it didn’t work out between us. It was then that I had a minor style epiphany -I knew that I loved the idea of the boots when I saw them and that they are very in style and on every page of the fashion mags…but that’s not how I’ve ever dressed myself before so why was I subscribing now? I don’t follow trends or anything dictated by fashion mags -this clunky, chunky shoe trend has been persisting for years now and still I have not succumb and the idea that I almost considered it…well, let’s just say not buying those boots made my day. I rarely speak of things within fashion that I despise like this shoe trend and high-wasted mom pants but it felt uplifting to chose to look like a woman instead of like everyone else teetering on those clunky disasters. While this photo is not exactly what I wanted to show, they keep appearing on my search and they’re hideous enough.

18AugThe Commercials Of The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games

We apologize for our slight departure from style-relevant writings but the Army of M.E. have been so Olympic-obsessed. About the commercials, we love the Visa commercials: the warm monochromatic tones, the dramatic music and the always emotion-provoking voice of Morgan Freeman. You can click HERE to see them all from your computer as well as the stories behind the athletes. We loved that as soon as Michael Phelps won on Saturday night they aired the “Congratulations Michael Phelps” spot. According to Visa, these are the moments that inspire the world -we couldn’t agree more. We also love the Coke commercials -our favorite is Yao Ming vs. Lebron James pitting cultural symbols of the US vs. China and meeting, without dispute, at a bottle of Coke. This is one of the most powerful ads I’ve seen. Understandably, it’s from a company that made its brand name overpower that of the actual product. You order a Coke, not a cola -this is the goal of every brand ever created. Our other favorite commercial is also from Coke -showing athletes of the Olympics and Special Olympics being medaled, we cry every time. Please let us know what your favorite commercials are…

18AugThe 2008 Beijing Olympic Games

It’s been over a week, two weekends, and our captivation and emotional attachment to the Olympic games has only escalated. In our bunkers from London to New York, it is all the same -people in awe, brought to tears and screams of triumph. Witnessing these amazing feats of physical endurance and mental will is an honor. These athletes are amazing -the only real celebrities on this planet as far as we’re concerned. Michael Phelps renews our pride in being American and unites the whole world in celebration -we congratulate him on his record-breaking 8 gold medals. We’ve always watched the Olympics, but this time around it has been extra special…the Army of M.E. bow our heads in salute to these magicians of physical and mental strength.

15AugIt’s O K Don’t Look At The Road : Gallery Opening

Tomorrow night at The Fuse Gallery is the opening reception for the new photo book by Yeah Yeah Yeahs member Nick Zinner. Apparently, he’s released three other photo books prior to this one that slipped past our radar and checking out the images HERE may explains why. I love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and it’s great he’s using his touring time to do something more constructive than getting laid…I suppose. Tomorrow 16. Aug. Fuse Gallery 93 2nd Ave. betw. 5th & 6th Streets. Reception from 7p-10p.
