07AugThe Cover Up: September 2008

It’s that time again kids -time for those Weapons of Mass Adverts known as the September issues. No, these won’t accompany you on public transportation -they can hardly make the trip from the newsstand/mailbox to the house as a result of them being obnoxiously thick and heavy with a barrage of endless ads.

Sophi Dahl graces the September 2008 Harper’s Bazaar UK Issue appropriately entitled, ‘The British Issue.’ Now I just happened to have caught Ms. Dahl whoring it up with street thugs one too many times to see the glam beneath the tarnish, but that’s just me. Tyra Banks is on the US version of Sept. HB which you can see here. Kate Hudson appears not looking at all like herself on W.

Vogue UK Sept. 08 features Karen Elson shot by Nick Knight.

07AugAdbusters 79: Hipsters = End Of Western Civilization

This is one of the most entertaining articles ever written -ever. It’s no surprise that it hails from Adbusters -a mag I’ve been a long-time fan of. While I think the writing quality is worthy, I’m a little stumped that it is the cover story. I don’t think the subject matter itself deserves such recognition. Additionally, putting Vice mag in a sentence also referencing Wallpaper and Another Magazine is sacrilege to the Gods of printed matter -the Adbusters peeps must have had some beef with the latter two publications because Vice magazine is the appropriator of the hipster and all its shallow hypocrisy. I love the mention of the photo-bloggers visually documenting the empty souls of hipsterdom -thinking they are spreading something worthwhile. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not a hater, I can’t be. I drown in a sea of this retardation of individuality every time I leave my bunker -which is probably why I have become a recluse. I also realize the hypocrisy of sitting behind a computer screen and critiquing others -that’s what blogs are for (which this is not). I’m just relieved to find articles for well-circulated publications venting in an articulated and intelligent way on things I’ve always found obvious. Here are some of my favorite excerpts: “Less a subculture, the hipster is a consumer group - using their capital to purchase empty authenticity and rebellion” “An amalgamation of its own history, the youth of the West are left with consuming cool rather than creating it” “…the hipster’s self-involved and isolated maintenance does nothing to feed cultural evolution”. Click HERE for the full story. See, I don’t care that these masses of sameness party, it’s great -have fun! Thing is, there’s SO MUCH happening politically, environmentally, and so on that these people collectively ignore, as noted in the self-involved quote. They can spend money to look like a poor trucker all they want -it’s not about how they dress- they just need to get the eff up and stand for something! There is reason for (r)evolution right now: fellow citizens die in an unjustified war daily, media conglomerates lie to us hourly, the government fucks up constantly, Wall St. hikes up the price of oil each minute -don’t accept it. Stop reading this, turn off your effing computer get a sign, a friend (or a thousand) and start some sort of revolution! PLEASE! Your forefathers are crying.

06AugJovovich - Hawk Close

Milla Jovovich announced in Lucky Mag that she is no longer going to design and Jovovich-Hawk will close. The model/actress established the label in 2003 with her good friend and model Carmen Hawk. Recently brought into the mainstream repertoire with a capsule collection for Target, it was also a popular brand in stores like Fred Segal. Jovovich claims to be “in a time of rediscovery, from (her) career to…personal style.” Wow, that’s terrific spin for the economy is tanking and this is not the first time you’re going to see mid-market lines cease. Wake up fashionistas (we HATE that term) and smell the reality. Recessionista is the new fashionista -we hate all the ‘istas’ but at least it takes some innovation and creativity to be a recessionista- fashionista’s follow fashion BS and trends like sheep. We are sad for Milla, we’ll be following her like sheep to see what’s next -our love for her spans back to her early modeling years.

06AugMax Fish Kicks Can Get You Drunk

LA-based skate shop, Rival, has a pretty intoxicating incentive to purchase a pair of kicks from them. Their new ‘Max Fish’ shoes (you already know where this is going) are pictured here and they come with free drink coupons stitched into the footbeds that can obviously be redeemed at the LES bar of the same name. Just make sure you extract those coupons before wearing -I’m sure the bartenders of Max Fish don’t want your stank foot juice all over them (gross). Yeah, of all the dope kicks out there, these are pretty fug and drinks at Max Fish are already pretty cheap but the concept of this type of collaboration is what made us laugh. It’s a desperate economy when you have to use alcohol as an incentive to buy shit! Available at Rival -225 Hudson St. @ Broome. 212.929.7222.
