To focus on the most important Presidential election of my lifetime and possibly yours. The Army of M.E. cares not, at a time like this, about style, clothing, sales or anything else we normally cover. We will try to inject worthwhile style-related stories when we can but we are submerged in this election for its final week. We are also developing and planning what will be downtown Manhattan’s most talked about, renowned and must-be-at Election Night Gala! May the best man win. Also, our republik has been pirated by the other side -if you see ads running for the McCain-Palin burning ticket, know that we have filed many complaints and are trying to stop them from appearing. Here’s a little taste to keep you happy…

Opening today, quite oddly, in the Saatchi & Saatchi building in west Soho is a faux department store installation of Slow and Steady Wins the Race product. Designer Mary Ping has set up ‘departments’ similar to that one would typically be used to -complete with a perfume counter and a bridal atelier. You will find the complete archive of Slow and Steady products amongst the departments. It’s all on one floor of the business-laden building for four days. Photo courtesy of Slow and Steady Wins the Race. Spring 2009 The Department Store hosted by Saatchi & Saatchi. September 9-12. Open daily from 11a-8p. 375 Hudson St. -enter through King St. entrance. Is anyone not into Project Runway as much as they used to be like myself? Firstly, the 9pm time just doesn’t work for me -I preferred 10. Catching the 11p re-run is a great option but you can’t enter to win the $10,000 Bluefly shopping spree and mamma desperately needs that! It’s also becoming too predictable and easy. When I saw the preview show of last season’s show I knew immediately that Christian and Jillian would be at Bryant Park and told Christian to his face halfway through the season that he was definitely going to win actually calling him the next Alexander McQueen. Yeah, I don’t care about his ego inflating -when one is that talented he should be proud. But right now, it’s pretty obvious to me that the final three will be Korto (she’s my favorite, I want her to win), Leanne and either Jerell or Terry. Blayne -lose the Bl and he’s Kayne from season 3, he’ll be auf’d due to lack of taste. Stella -she’ll be auf’d for being a one-note (biker/leather). Joe is going to have a bad week and be auf’d. I’m sorry, is Kenley still in? Oh yes, while her bitchiness is so transparent, her tarty ’50’s style is just going to make Nina barf on her heels one week from a sweetness overdose and she’ll be out.
Now, as for last night -a few amazing looks. As previously noted, I lurves Korto! As soon as I saw Jerell’s full look I was really impressed by the styling and full look with the dramatic ponytail, etc. And I canNOT believe after Leanne’s magical creation no one mentioned Thierry Mugler! If Nina were there she would have -that bubble hip is so Thierry! As fun as it was crashing last season’s finale runway show which will be at NY Fashion Week two weeks from tomorrow, it’s too early in the morning, too long and I just don’t care that much. That’s actually how I feel about the upcoming fashion week entirely but we’ll address that later.
Lingering in your future are not only the unabridged dictionary-sized September issues of fashion glossies, but the hugely anticipated re-design of Andy Warhol’s Interview mag since Glenn O’Brien, Fabien Baron and Christopher Bollen replaced Ingrid Sischy. Any second now it will be on stands and will feature the Kate Moss cover pictured here. What’s behind this cover? An interview with Martin Margiela -who just about never gives interviews! They will also have a new feature called “Interview Back Page” where they will print retro interviews. The first one is with Christy Turlington from when she was 16. Apparently, the current August issue was their best selling in a decade. It was tough to hear of Sischy’s departure but we are pretty excited to see the future Interview.
Both HERE and HERE we made fun of Katie Holmes and her aggressive style agenda to try and bring back the pinch roll pant cuff via 1985. We’ve deployed our fashion army to take her as a prisoner in our war on bad taste. The ladies over at Style File seem to have discovered the details behind Katie’s awful look. We know she’s been looking to her BFF Posh Spice for style queues (as well as diets, read: the 900 calorie/day diet -that’s about what’s in the Frapp you’re drinking). For the pinch-rolled jeans, it seems Holmes sourced Posh’s hubby Becks who has recently been endlessly wearing his PRPS Impala jeans much like her. Not surprisingly, those are men’s jeans and while it can be quite cool to rock pieces from your man’s closet -it must be done appropriately, and not pinch-rolled. Here is Katie, her bulky pinch rolls and adorable Suri in Manhattan this past weekend.
It’s that time again kids -time for those Weapons of Mass Adverts known as the September issues. No, these won’t accompany you on public transportation -they can hardly make the trip from the newsstand/mailbox to the house as a result of them being obnoxiously thick and heavy with a barrage of endless ads.
Sophi Dahl graces the September 2008 Harper’s Bazaar UK Issue appropriately entitled, ‘The British Issue.’ Now I just happened to have caught Ms. Dahl whoring it up with street thugs one too many times to see the glam beneath the tarnish, but that’s just me. Tyra Banks is on the US version of Sept. HB which you can see here. Kate Hudson appears not looking at all like herself on W.
Vogue UK Sept. 08 features Karen Elson shot by Nick Knight.

Answer: If you want to be in the front row of fashion you’ll run, not walk, to this column
Question: What is On The Runway (answered correctly by one of the male contestants)
The Army of M.E. has a lot of love and respect for Cathy Horyn and we consider her On The Runway blog imperative reading for all who are stylish. We learned a lot from her comments during the Blog:Mode panel discussion at the Met a few months back -especially when she mentioned the importance of the regulars who comment on her blog and how she’s built relationships with some of them. Aww. She’s got all the smart style sense sans the pretension -as we declared month’s ago Wintour is over!
