22OctRestaurant Charles Opens Today

Brilliant chef of The Waverly (and former co-worker of mine), chef John DeLucie is at the consulting helm for the latest, greatest epicurean addition to the West Village, Charles. A departure from DeLucie’s delectable comfort dishes, he has encouraged chef John McAllister to curate a menu from his specialty of lighter, healthy Mediterannean dishes. DeLucie is a consultant on the project and oversees the finalized menu which will be laden with fish and dishes cooked with olive oil as opposed to butter. In addition to heart-friendly fish and olive oil, some pre-opening dishes included seared duck breast with roasted grapes and escarole, braised beef short rib with swiss chard and golden raisins, as well as diver scallops and prawns with fingerling potatoes and saffron. The wine list and select cocktails equally impress with consultation by Keith Goldston, owner of Time Warner Building wine bar, Clo. The interior was designed by Rafael de Cardenas who worked the denizen space into a brilliant rustic and cozy atmosphere. Plush red curtains, marquee bulbs and black-speckled wall mirrors add to the tin-ceiling, dark-floored room. Don’t expect to just show up and wait at the bar though, there are only six seats at the bar and they are not giving out the phone number. You can attempt a touching novella that harkens all emotions of how you absolutely need to experience Charles before you die at: reservations@restaurantcharles.com -but they’ll likely give you the contact of their snaggle-toothed cousin named Charles before they’ll give up a table.

14OctThe Final Presidential Debate : Watch Event

That’s right, it’s time for the Army of M.E. to completely neglect you for the next 48 hours. We’re sorry, but this is the final debate:watch event. This does not mean there won’t be more events….and potentially more neglect. We still love you…

09OctDouble Crown Restaurant

It opened on September 16th and we gave it about a month, as we do most new places that serve food -to work out the kinks (usually with service). The Army of M.E. were quite pleased and we have a feeling we would have been had we made it on opening day as well. It’s well known that the architects are AvroKo who also did Public which is just a few blocks south of Double Crown. The concept this time is focused around the British Empire, specifically the Eastern countries like India and Singapore colonized by the Brits. Specific to design you’ll find tons of teak, ceiling fans strung together with leather belts and carved, marble light fixtures dimly lit. Any menu with foie gras demands that we try it -inventively marinated with tandoori and accompanied by unique Early Grey prunes we were intrigued. One army member attempted the pheasant and licorice pie with lavender -I imagined the lavender tasting like soap but luckily it all worked together -not surprising considering the chef Brad Farmerie who specializes in executing epicurean delight from unlikely flavor combinations. Around the corner is the bar, which they also own, Madam Geneva which is great for after or before-dinner cocktails as well. 316 Bowery @ Bleecker.

08Oct” Chloe Is The New Beatrice “

No, really, we swear. Actually, we’ve never claimed anywhere else as the new Beatrice before, we’ve just been desperately wanting it for so long now and the other night a trusted friend uttered the above phrase. But don’t get too excited, it’s pretty much the same thing just on the east side with a little less sketch to its interior -which is not necessarily a good thing. I can certainly tell you that a proper write up with press photos in New York Magazine is not a good thing at all (when you’re attempting terminally cool and unaccessable). The same staples like tons of subway tile, vintage tables and chairs, dim lighting, good DJs and smaller, less iphone-snapshot-inspiring bathrooms are included. It’s located downstairs (of course) from the French restaurant Casanis at 81 Ludlow near Broome. Some peeps don’t know the # yet but we have 212.677.0067. To me, it’s the same dead souls rotting in the corners only now, since it’s a little brighter, I may actually have to see their faces, ugh.

08SepThe Eldridge Has Finally Arrived

People have not been able to shut up about this place for months and it’s just now opening, sort of. They’re hosting a lot of private events for fashion week and such over the next week or so but they are open, in some cases, after the events. Everyone became obsessed with getting a ‘key’ to the place that was supposed to be completely private -yeah, Bungalow 8 all over again- but I don’t know why these places waste their time. I will always get in ;) In fact, The Eldridge wanting to be the new Bungalow became even more evident when owner Matt Levine described it as “a club fused with the hospitality of a concierge service” -someone call Amy Sacco! The ‘key’ pictured above right that was originally needed to enter has gone south and it will be open to the public -with a strict door, as all places worth going have. It has a clandestine front facade camouflaged as a bookstore and the interior details include gold-flecked floors, leather banquets and wood everywhere plus the oh so ‘mine is bigger than yours’ aspect of a $650k gold-plated Armand de Brignac champagne wall. I believe one of us has an event to attend there this week -we’ll update the details if necessary. 247 Eldridge between Houston & Stanton. Interior shot with house lights up (i.e. it will be much more dark and mysterious in person) courtesy of Thrillist.

29AugApotheke To Open In Chinatown For Fashion Week

Chinatown has found its replacement for one of my favorite drinking dens of the past, Double Happiness. This place reminds me of it in style but the concept is entirely different, being fashioned after an apothecary. A requisite of all places that intend to be ‘cool’ its remotely located in a corner of downtown you wouldn’t imagine yourself in the evening searching for a drink. The aesthetics elude to 19th century Parisian absinthe dens (yes, it’s all about absinthe of late) and the artistic misfits who hid in them. The man behind the cocktail menu is Albert Trummer whose resume includes Bouley, Thom’s Bar and Kittichai. Apotheke will have over 500 house cocktails which are divided into sections of apothecary -Pain Relief, Stress Relief, Health & Beauty and Aphrodisiacs. There are also over 1,000 bottles of liquor from around the world. Apotheke lounge is located at 9 Doyers St. (it was once actually an opium den) and I’d anticipate some fashion week after party there since this is a soft opening and they are promoting the place to be fully open by then.

21AugInside Sasha Petraske’s White Star Bar

Opening two nights ago was White Star which is owned by Sasha Petraske of Milk & Honey/Little Branch fame. The concept here is quite different. No table service, no secret, regularly changing phone number to call and make a reservations -just a straight-forward bar with a penchant for absinthe and something against cocktails. No fancy infusions here, just a marble bar serving apertifs, beer, wine and (legal) absinthe (that’s one of our favorite words to say, say it, you’ll see) neat or on the rocks. Members of the Army of M.E. stopped by and loved it -they said it was packed but somehow not annoyingly so (we suspect it was the absinthe that took the edge off) even though it’s quite small. Also the fault of the spirits were their hideous photos so we had to steal this one from Eater. The full house lights don’t do the clandestine atmosphere justice -the only light is usually that of the Moroccan white star fixtures hovering over the bar for which the bar is named after. According to Eater, Petraske has taken over the space next door and is already prospecting expansion. What makes the place truly special is that Petraske is behind the bar, not figuratively, like the many establishments who have commissioned him to curate their drink menu -it seems Sasha must have missed tending bar since that’s where you can find him at White Star. 21 Essex (near Hester).

14AugFreemans Closes Today For The Weekend

Just a little FYI that Freemans will be closed today until Aug. 17th for a makeover. It’s not a big deal, just minor renovations -the stuffed game will still be leering out of the walls and such. New chef Michael Citarella is taking over and the kitchen will be making some changes.

29JulThompson L E S Opens Today

The fourth Jason Pomeranc gentrification installation (in his case, boutique hotel) will open tonight in LES. It has been a rising beacon for years now, haunting the passerby with the anticipation of another neighborhood’s once-vibrant flavor swirling with the tasteless ingredients of its commercialized neighbors. The decor claims to be an homage to the neighborhood but only comfortably within the confines of the usual aesthetic that goes along with this development group. I was living on Allen before they broke ground, I met with a commercial realtor regarding my own endeavors and he was the inside man to all the commercial changes slated for the LES. When he told me about this project I moved as soon as my lease was up. I must admit, I lived around the corner from THOR when it opened and that was peaceful, but does anyone even stay there? It’s always hauntingly vacant in and around that place (although all the action happens upstairs). I just have a feeling that will not be the case for this Thompson property. We covered the story on their Warhol pool back in March HERE, they will have 141 rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows and a staff outfitted in Rogan-designed uniforms. Yawn. (190 Allen St.)

25JulNew Social Bunker Opens : Country Club

Tomorrow night is the grand opening of ‘Country Club’ with a party featuring Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes. The press opening was Wednesday night so we’ll give a little prep talk…the dress code, as if anyone needed an excuse to dress this way, is uber preppie -the hats, the turned up collars and the army of M.E. collectively gagging in the corner. No, sorry, it’s…cool. It has edited country club aesthetics with downtown influences like Warhol photos and Zebra and crocodile skin banquettes. The drink to have here are the bellinis that have a bevy of different flavoring options like roasted pear, blood orange and my personal favorite cocktail flavor of the moment, pomegranite (I like to keep my liver confused by the poisonous alcohol and beneficial antioxidants flooding it at the same time). They also serve a light menu which you can see HERE courtesy of Thrillist.
